THE RONA RAP
The challenge was to create an animated segment for Sesame Street that combines five or more medians: 2D, 3D, live action, stop motion, traditional animation, AR, VR, etc.
I had a lot of freedom when it came to the subject matter for this project. I knew I wanted to make an educational yet entertaining segment about the trending topic of the year, Covid19. When gathering research, I found that children have difficulties understanding not to touch their face, especially during the pandemic. Additionally, teachers had noticed that children have been exercising less during recess. So this animated segment assists in solving this problem.
The animated segment educates children on rules to abide to during this pandemic through song and dance. Some of these rules being: staying 6 ft. apart, washing your hands regularly, and always wearing your mask. Lens Studio allowed there to be an additional AR element within the project that acts as an interactive component, encouraging kids to exercise by dancing along with the characters that appear in the animated segment.
Compositing 2D characters, 3D text, filmed water color backgrounds, stop motion tissue movement, and stop motion/hand-drawn crayon backgrounds, while making everything look visually consistent was tough. I had no idea how to integrate stop motion within the piece when I first agreed to the project but I had a blast figuring it out along the way. And although it wasn’t a requirement for this project, I challenged myself to write an original song for this animated segment, as well as, voiced for the characters Lil Tizer, Stretch, and T.I. Shoo.
Big thanks to Kelly Warner, soundmural.tv, for assisting me in composing this song and providing voice talent for the character Bubbles.
